Several reasons. Java runs on client machines, and as such can take time to load even with broadband.
.NET runs on the server, so is quicker and more secure.

Java doesn't necessarily run on the client. It can also run on the server - jboss, servlets, etc.
I guess deciding between the two depends on your preference.

Web Service Tests.
By .net you mean windows applications or asp.net? well, as far as windows applications are concerned, every time you compile something with java, java creates byte codes instead of machine code, so that byte code has to be translated to machine code using the java package that you have to install. This extra step makes java a little slower than other languages. One other thing I hate about java is its laggy GUIs and the annoying process of creating GUIs.
As far as asp.net is concerned, I don't think you need any special packages to be able to load pages that are coded in .net, but to be able to use java, you have to download java...

I'm familiar with Java, and I appreciate how ASP.NET comes with a free Visual Web Developer (Express Edition) straight from Microsoft. This is a big plus over the standard command-line compiler that comes from Sun Microsystems.
Also, ASP.NET renders all the controls into plain HTML code, making it ultra-portable across different web browsers and operating systems. While Java endeavours to do the same thing, the fact remains that people still need to download a separate Java plug-in. This is a bit of a convenience, and not everyone will do it.

Does java automatically bind controls to databases?
Does jave publish movies with fewer than 5 mouse clicks?
I prefer you and the rest of my competition keep using java to do these tasks.
Seriously.
Oh, and by the way .net does use java. Its not a "this or that" thing, its a "that, and some" thing.
Would you rather drive to the store or take a car?
It's like having spaghetti, with sauce.

Every tehnology has it own advanteges. I like java because you can execute java classes on almost every machine and opereting system, but my job is like an .NET C# developer. I start to work in C# because the firm in witch I was working wanted from me to make some aplication that will work on Windows XP and Windows Mobile 6.0 with MS SQL Server under it for database access. In this situation the logical choice for me was to start programming in C# .NET because both operating systems was Microsoft products and also SQL Server, so we decide to use .NET C# because it is also Microsoft product.

Hi everyone, There seems to be a hot chat going on between the .NET and Java developers. Well I, sort of, have worked on both so I thought it would be better if I pass on my opinion as well.
Well to start with, both platforms are good but in their respective areas.
Basics first. Some users have passed a comment that Java is slower than .NET and that it needs a Virtual Machine so its slow. Well, true but not exactly, the question is why?
Information! .NET also requires the .NET Framework on the client side to run same as the Virtual Machine of Java. But as far as I see it, the library Sun wrote runs externally on the MICROSOFT Windows platform which is normally installed in a vast majority of PCs(92% to be exact).
And when Microsoft was trying to write .NET they had in mind the Windows code itself which gives them an obvious head start.
Secondly, As known by all Microsoft has long been known for their ease of use and user friendliness so it wasnt to anyones surprise that Microsoft made life of developers of their platform easier by providing a well sorted out IDE with good out of the box controls.
Java were a bit side tracked as they had to build something free, so they couldnt invest much in getting a well sorted IDE built with all the funky gizmos, and the same reason put them off in the support department, so end result, a platform difficult to work with. This is actually the biggest pain in the neck for a Java developer as whenever they think of any reuse they have to go third party, which costs a lot. So if someone thinks Java's free, think again.
There was a user who commented on java being client side and .NET being server side. :)
Well I think you were talking of Javascript there brother, not Java. Yes, There is a difference between Java and Javascript,a lot of difference. See, Java is an independent platform on which software is built(Compiled), javascript on the other hand, is just a W3C standard used by browsers to consume client side processing, to reduce round-trips. This doesnt involve the Virtual Machine.
Now, a lot has been said in favour of .NET but Java has its own advantages. J2ME for example has a considerable market that .NET cannot or should I say could not capture. And there it is considerably successful. All kinds of Mobile Phones have Java apps installed which use the same lightweight version of the JVM. So its all about the domain that you are working in.
Bottom line. Dont think of which is best between Java or .NET any more. Either you work in Java or .NET try using the best strategy for the task in hand, and wherever possible use XML in the form of service or what ever, so that you would never need to worry about defending your platform of choice any time in the future.
Cheers Sameer.

Like Sameer ul Haque said, there is a difference between Java and Java script, but their differences are not that large. I have worked a lot with java in university deigining applications in general, and moving over to java script to use the .NET services availible on aspspider, was actually quite simple. Not a lot of changes. Yes there are some, but any skilled programmer can find what they need out of any language and will be able to make what is missing from what they have.
Basically you get all the server side bonuses of .NET with the functionallity of java via javascript combined. So you are getting 90% of the good stuff out of Java + .NET so it is worth it to use .NET
AND there is lots of support for .NET on the web.
Overall it is at the very least a more convienent platform to use.

ASP.NET and the .NET Framework simplify development by separating the application logic and presentation logic making it easier to maintain the code. You write the design code (presentation logic) and the actual code (application logic) separately eliminating the need to mix HTML code with ASP code. ASP.NET can also handle the details of maintaining the state of the controls, such as contents in a textbox, between calls to the same ASP.NET page

it is much easier, mean many libraries/controls r pre developed by microsoft so user had to only integrate thos controls by own requirements.
and .Net has some languages on single envoironment like C#,VB.net ASP.Net,....

Its funny I was thinking about this yesterday and just saw this today. I grew up with Java, but wanted to learn .net to be more well rounded and really have found it easier to learn and that there is more support on the internet and else ware for it. Here at work however, we use java and php a lot. In fact I am not sure if we even have any .net applications although I know we have some old asp apps out there.

.net comes under the category of Rapid Development. so usually if a project is required to completely in a short period of time on Windows platform .net is the way to go. In java it takes longer to implement though it supports different platforms.

Well mainly because Java sucks and second who told you that you cant use Java you can..There is something called javascript which I am prety sure you have heard about and you should know that javascript is like browserside not serverside but If you do need to use java serverside you should read up on Ajax and crap..So yeah .NET is easier and way too kool so yeah screw java GO .NET..

Simply if you compare Java vs ASP.NET in web application development, ASP.NET is always in the front just because of features that offering. For an example just think creation of web service. If you know java, web service creation in java is very very cumbersome process. But in .NET it is very very quicky thing. Also VS.NET is the most powerful IDE that a developer can have

ASP.NET is better performing than Java and more likely to run properly on more systems out of the box than Java. But Java can be coded once for multiple platforms, so you have to choose the right technology based on what you need to do.
