Are you making a life long decision that may effect your happiness wellbeing and earnings potential?
I ask becuase only a moron would adopt one and give up the other. Thats called putting all of your eggs in the same basket.
They all have plusses and minuses. They all have good days and bad days.
You take someone who evangelizes asp.net, and given the choice between writing php or starving to death what would you expect him to say?
ASp has a short development cycle. It also eats up bandwidth. With AJax comming on strong, not becuase it adds so much finctionality, but because it reduces network traffic at the same time.
The funny thing is, you ask the question, which inharently assumes that someone who programs in all of them would give you an answer. Anyone who doesn't Couldn't answer your question accuratly.
So you are looking for something like "Oh don't waste your time with ____. What a waste of my life."
Sorry, not here.
I started programming in 1984-1985.
They are all good, THEY ARE GREAT. This is a fantastic time we live in.
Good luck, and happy coding.

It depends on what you are wanting to accomplish. All of them have upsides/downsides. Be more specific and you may get a more concise answer. If you are strictly MS, then ASP would probably be the way to go. Especially if you are using the Express IDEs.

Asp is better paid because companies are using it , and it
is because it have implemented security in itself,
I have experience in PHP , it is simple and ok for
quick learning , but ASP is more stable ,
This is my opinion take it for grant.

I used to play with php, but sincerly, when i
taste the sweetness of c# with asp, i'll never
go back, php, is simply... for begginers, it
can make you learn the basic of any programming
languaje, without learning to use the compiler
commands for the console, just simply installa apache
and start playing, but if you what to go serios about
programming, try c#, you learn one language usefull
in web apps, desktop application, handhelps, etc etc.

Now go to a PHP site and see what they say.
I use asp simply because I can write a Database driven Web application from start to finish in 1 to 2 days.
Ask a PHP group how long it takes.
But like I said In other posts, I am also looking for the speed of Client side application programming. C# does not run on the client side. It's not part of html / xhtml and therefore unsupported by the browsers. This is the main reason why Php-Java is so common today.
But consider this. When you have your own server, there is nothing to stop you from runing the Direct X namespace on the server side, and then transmitting "rendered on the fly" 3d interactive images. I suppose you could say the same thing about OpenGl on the Unix servers.
So the bottom line is If I can develop apps quickly, and take advantage of client side java script, then why write programs slowly that do the same?
I USE ASP.NET. Just might be the best thing Microsoft ever did for the Internet.

ASP.net is microsoft wonderful job i love to program in asp.net because its very easy to learn and code as well as loads of resources and free IDE tools to use which has the fantastic intellisense for easy programming. I am using asp since 2000 and now i am using asp.net both are excellent so no complaints. PHP is good when u think of switching to opensource but to be honest i never gave a try in php
try both and see using which u get on very well and just stick to that thats my suggestion

what?
"if you wanna go for a commercial thing ASP is more known "
You believe that do you?
You believe that the majority of servers out there are running windows?
And you believe that PHP is for hobbiest, and other non commercial people who aren't really serious about what they are doing?
actually take the time to read this :
http://www.besthostratings.com/articles/unix_vs_windows_host.html
then
read this
http://zolmedia.com/TechVille/2004/WebServers.htm
now
look at the facts
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2006/06/04/june_2006_web_server_survey.html
And
tell me that asp or .net is more widely known or used.
Windows server is running on 29% of the internet. The rest is linux in one way shape or form.
Which means that less than 29% of the internet uses asp.net.
Now what do you believe?

well depends, if you need a application simple and useful you can use php,but if you like a application more complete with all the facilities of the language you can use asp net by the controls used, other example you can select the language to use with asp i think that is a big advantage.

Gee it would seem that it would depend on what you are doing. I like you (might be) am learning asp.net. I am converting from java. I see that in many ways they are similar and with that in mind many be the answer is whatever the developer is most comfortable with.

ASP.NET really give you a fast way to develop a web site, with a bunch of possibilities, and also the use of AJAX reduce the amount of traffic on the net.
The advantage of PHP is that is free and you can find anywhere a free hosting for your pages.
I chose ASP.NET to develop my sites every time.

I would not compare ASP with PHP or CGI. First, you must remember that CGI is not a language. CGI, or Common Gateway Interface, as the name suggests is sort of a mechanism to allow interaction between applications and servers. As such, CGI is a technology and not a language in its own right. The most commonly used language for CGI has been PERL.
Now, to get to your question, I would not compare ASP with either PHP or PERL. PHP and PERL are complete languages in their own rights. Whereas, ASP is only an interpreted language.
You might be better off comparing ASP .NET with the others. I believe that ASP .NET has better support and third party development tools than PHP or PERL do, and as such, they offer the most flexibility as well as ease of use. You can find more tutorials, code snippets, etc. for ASP .NET then you would for PHP or PERL.
However, please do not compare ASP (VBscript or Jscript based) to PHP.

Okay, as a long term developer, here is my best advice:
ASP is a fairly kludgy development environment. It is possible to do amazing sites using iut, yes, but the amount of extra work needed gives a high price of entry to a new developer. It is also pushing the boundaries of Javascript past sensible levels (as using VB is both nuts and makes for extremely unreadable code.)
ASP.Net has a lot of advantages - clean platform, regular updates from Microsoft. AJAX is a breeze. The development environment is powerful and available for next to nothing.
PHP, again is a very usable platform, as is Rails. However, the thing I like about ASP.NET is ease of integration and simplicity of deployment. I pretty much drop my files in to the correct directory, and it all works. No configuration of interpreters, extentions etc. If it is in the correct location (and it will be if copying from development box) it will work.

ASP.NET is separate from the IIS process, as opposed to ASP. ASP.NET can run on more platforms. They also differ in the way they are interpreted and compiled. Class ASP is just simpler. ASP.NET adds in security and other necessary features.

not important Different Between ASP.NEt & PHP.PHP is Easiest to Use and test your web app because it is Open Source but ASP.NET Learning is so harder than PHP.Because Learning Server Control ,Web.config File and... is difficult.
bout ASP.NEt is most Powerfull and Advance .Debugging in VS 2008 Help You to Write Correct Web APP. you can write ASp.NEt Web APP with C# or VB.net Language and this is a power of ASP.NEt.You can Learn Vb or c# and Write App in Web Or Windows App bout not it to PHP.
You can mixed Vb and C# Classes in aSp.net and it's so good.
in total ASP.NET is Better Than PHP.
